Q: When you wrote “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” with Steve Goodman and it became a big hit, you didn’t take credit for it. Why?

A: We were sharing a little hotel room in New York. I went down to the Village and had a few beers and Steve stayed in. I came back to the hotel room and he’s hunched over a desk writing a song. All he had were two lines, it was a real sad song: “It was all that I could do to keep from crying/ Sometimes it seems so useless to remain.” Well, I jumped on the bed and started playing this imaginary fiddle and sang, “You don’t have to call me darling, darling. But you never even called me by my name,” and we started laughing and started goofing on the whole premise of the song, the standard things you put in country songs. We did it for about an hour and went to bed and I forgot about it. About five months later, Steve calls me up and says, “Hey I did it. I just recorded our song.” I said, “What song?” “You Never Even Called Me By My Name.” I said, “Man that’s no song.” He says, “I added this and that.” I said, “Steve, you take that one. That is your baby. We’re just making fun of country music.” He added that whole verse about mothers, trucks and prison on his own and made it a song. And it became a hit, so Steve said, “Now do you want your name on it?” and I said, “No I’m not an Indian giver. It’s your song.” The next morning he delivered a $14,000 jukebox. I still have it in my office.”

There’s a really fun old-time music jam at Nashville’s 5 Spot every Wednesday night, and on Friday (Nov. 6) some of the regulars gathered for a house party that seemed like it could have happened about 200 years ago. There was tap-dancing and square-dancing on a real hard-wood floor, homemade stew simmering on the stove and of course, traditional American music. People are encouraged to bring their own instruments sit down to play at these jams, but Friday there were a few bands booked, including one led by Woody Pines.

It will be the final 45 minutes of The WEMU Fall 2009 On-air Fundraiser.  As you know, WEMU is a public radio station affiliated with NPR and a huge chunk of our funding comes directly from our listeners.  Even if you are not in a position to give much, we will reach our goals if everybody who listens just gives a little.

Last week technical difficulties forced us from our live location at The Ark back to the studio, but things will be all business tomorrow as we try to go over the top for this pledge drive.  I will be playing music from the likes of Johnny Cash, John Fogerty and more before we turns thing over to EMU Football.  Thanks to everybody who gave last week!
