2009 WEMU Fall Fundraiser 10/24 12-12:45pm!

Howdy folks-

Please tune in to The Roots Music Project tomorrow (10/24) from 12 til 12:45 (Eastern).  You can also listen in online at: http://www.wemu.org

It will be the final 45 minutes of The WEMU Fall 2009 On-air Fundraiser.  As you know, WEMU is a public radio station affiliated with NPR and a huge chunk of our funding comes directly from our listeners.  Even if you are not in a position to give much, we will reach our goals if everybody who listens just gives a little.

Last week technical difficulties forced us from our live location at The Ark back to the studio, but things will be all business tomorrow as we try to go over the top for this pledge drive.  I will be playing music from the likes of Johnny Cash, John Fogerty and more before we turns thing over to EMU Football.  Thanks to everybody who gave last week! We could really use the support of everybody to help keep Roots Music on the air!

Honky Tonkin’ The Sweetback Sisters honor old-time country music

Long and interesting article from CentralJersey.com about the mysterious Sweetback Sisters who I have been playing on The Roots Music Project.

Excerpt:
The Sweetback Sisters performed their first gig in June 2006. A few months later they had their self-released EP, which was made primarily to secure more shows. They couldn’t necessarily embark on a long tour because band members were still in college, but they managed to string together a series of weeklong dates. In August Ms. Miller received her master’s in speech pathology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “It was perfect placement,” she says. “I got to be around all that great country music.” Upon receiving her degree, she placed her belongings in storage, hit the road and drove directly to a gig.

The Protean Picker Jim Lauderdale

Nice interview with Jim Lauderdale from The Birmingham Weekly

Here is small tidbit:

One great thing that happened during this time was, when I first started doing the records with Ralph (Stanley), I hooked up with Robert Hunter, who’s one of my favorite songwriters. He co-wrote the new Dylan album, but along with Jerry Garcia, he wrote most of the Grateful Dead catalog. It’s been great working with him. We released an album of songs we collaborated on called Headed for the Hills, back in 2004, and now we’re finishing up another batch of collaborations that’ll hopefully come out in March, and that’s going to be called Patchwork River.
